Opposition MP interrupts minister's speech midway, claims it's 'unclear'

PARLIAMENT | An opposition lawmaker today asked Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Ramli Mohd Nor to make Tiong King Sing stop his winding-up speech midway as he could not understand what the tourism minister was saying.

Raising Standing Order 38 (3), Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang) claimed that what Tiong was saying was unclear.

"What is the issue being presented by the minister? We don't understand, and maybe he (Tiong) himself does not understand.

"So I ask the minister to not bother winding up because we don't understand. It's better (he put it) in writing, ask (his) officer to write in a language that everyone can understand,” said Awang (above, right), who is former human resources deputy minister.

However, Ramli said that it was unnecessary for Tiong to stop his winding-up speech.

“YB Pendang, I understand… How come Pendang doesn’t understand?” he asked.

Ramli later asked Tiong to provide copies of his reply to the opposition, to which the latter agreed.

Following this, the Dewan descended into chaos after Bung Moktar Radin (BN - Kinabatangan) and Chong Zhemin (Harapan - Kampar) stood up and claimed that Awang purposely raised the matter to waste time.

They also said Awang did not explain the standing order he was invoking when he stopped Tiong's speech midway.

Awang then justified his action, saying a speech that is unclear can be considered as meant to confuse the house, and is capable of being taken out of context.
