Selat Klang rep says 'forced' by circumstances to defect

Bersatu’s Selat Klang assemblyperson Abdul Rashid Asari said he voiced support for Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari not by choice but was “forced” to do so by circumstances.

According to the former Selangor Bersatu chief, he had no intention to “betray” Bersatu by backing the government.

“I ‘held’ Selangor (for Bersatu) for nine years... it’s not that I will leave it just like that.

“But as I have mentioned before, there’s too much political manoeuvring in Bersatu, and I felt sidelined... they did not want to listen to the (former) state liaison chief at all,” Rashid (above) told Malaysiakini.

“I did not want to do this (go against Bersatu) but if they have done this to me, I had to act accordingly,” he added.

Rashid was responding to the warning by PAS’ Jerantut MP Khairil Nizam Khirudin of divine retribution for turning his back on Perikatan Nasional.

“This treacherous person will not be safe from God’s punishment.

“We live in this world where there is God and one of the characteristics of believers is to stick to their promises. So, don’t give excuses,” Khairil told Malaysiakini.

‘Muhyiddin’s my friend’

On Monday, Rashid admitted being disappointed with the way Bersatu treated him to the point he felt as if the party no longer cared about him.

One such instance involved the allocation of the Kapar parliamentary seat ahead of the 15th general election, he said.

Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin

The seat was initially allocated to Bersatu, before PAS claimed it in violation of a written agreement made by PN’s three component parties, Rashid claimed.

Elaborating, Rashid stressed that he had no intention whatsoever to “betray” Bersatu, as party president-cum PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin was an old friend of his.

“I had no intention. Muhyiddin is my friend. I know and remember him as an old friend, so I will not leave him undignified.

“But certain acts by (Bersatu’s) top leaders seemed like wanting to push me away from Selangor, so I had to act.”

It is worth noting that Rashid’s former position as Selangor Bersatu chairperson is held by former minister Azmin Ali.

Previously, Rashid had voiced dissatisfaction with Bersatu being led by certain individuals who had only joined the party for “a day or two.”

Although he did not mention names, this was believed to refer to former PKR deputy president Azmin, who joined Bersatu following the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government, after the Sheraton Move in 2020.
