Unpaid salaries, WFH issues dominate HR Ministry app complaints

Unpaid salaries and disputes over working from home were the most frequent complaints registered by the Human Resources Ministry’s Working for Workers (WFW) application, said its minister Steven Sim.

In a written reply to one of his predecessors M Saravanan (BN-Tapah) he revealed that of the 34,156 complaints registered with the app as of Feb 24, some 6,393 concerned workers reporting that they had not received their salaries.

“As of Feb 24 this year, a total of 34,156 complaints were received by the application since it was launched in May 2021.

“Actions were taken on 33,093 complaints while 687 cases are still being inspected. We are also in the process of verifying 280 complaints,” he said in a written parliamentary reply published on the Dewan Rakyat website.

In addition to unpaid salaries, other common issues include 3,095 complaints from workers who were not allowed to work from home, 2,895 who claimed salary cuts that ran contrary to laws, and 2,768 cases of alleged unlawful termination.

The app also registered 2,424 complaints against employers who failed to comply with the minimum wage, 2,298 cases claiming a lack of overtime and termination benefits, as well as 1,577 complaints about the lack of an employment contract.

Sim, who took office after a cabinet reshuffle in December, said the application was still active and enabled workers to lodge complaints and raise labour issues.

The application allows over 15 million workers across the country, including foreign workers, to submit anonymous complaints related to labour issues.

Complainants can expect to receive a response within three to seven days. - Mkini
