Don't let Israel-Iran conflict distract from Gaza plight, Malaysia tells world

Amid an escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, Malaysia has urged the global community to remain focused on Gaza’s plight.

Gaza has been under attack from Israel for seven months, with 33,000 killed most of whom were women and children, while those still alive are facing a famine.

“The international community must not lose sight of the objective of ensuring the freedom of the Palestinians and their rights to their own lands,” said Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan in a statement today.

“Any distraction from this objective is what Israel wants, which is to deflect the global community’s attention from their nefarious inhumane and unconscionable acts in Palestine,” he added.

The current tensions were sharply escalated by Iran’s strikes on Israel, a direct response to an Israeli bombing of the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1, which killed seven members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

While there have been no casualties from the Iran strikes, it has warned that its attacks will be even more severe if Israel retaliates.

Mohamad said this would lead to a “never-ending cycle of violence that could devastate the region.”

“The Malaysian government urges the parties concerned to de-escalate and create the necessary environment to end this conflict immediately,” he added.

He also echoed the sentiments of the UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

Meanwhile, Wisma Putra said it is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of Malaysians in Iran, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq.

It said Malaysians in the region should also be prepared for any flight disruptions and adjust their travel plans accordingly. - Mkini
