PM: I won't entertain Akmal’s 'stupid' ministers remark

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim asserted that he will not give Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh’s comments the time of day after the latter called Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming “stupid” and blamed him for the sluggish economy.

“I don’t entertain such statements. To my mind, it’s not the proper context of our unity government. We should work together,” he told reporters today.

Anwar said this after launching the Dr Ambedkar International Convention and Ambedkar’s 133rd birth anniversary celebration held at the Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC) in Shah Alam, Selangor today.

Recently, Akmal denied that the boycott campaigns he championed are worsening the economy.

Instead, he insisted it was because of “stupid” ministers like Nga that the economy was performing poorly.

The Umno leader made the remark after Nga posted on X saying local workers have suffered due to the boycotts called for by “irresponsible parties”.

“Never fall into the trap of instigators, our country needs the efforts of all parties to develop the national economy,” Nga was reported as saying.

Attached to his post was a screenshot of a Chinese media report highlighting the hardship faced by local workers - allegedly affected by business boycotts.

In recent weeks, Akmal has called for a boycott against KK Mart over the “Allah” socks issue and against cosmetics entrepreneur Aliff Syukri’s products after the latter’s Hari Raya video was deemed disrespectful to the sanctity of Ramadan.

Last Tuesday, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar granted an audience to Umno and DAP leaders - including Akmal - at the Istana Negara and urged them to focus on unity, not division. - Mkini
