Mahkota polls: Zahid wants another MRSM for military children

MAHKOTA BY-ELECTION | The government is mulling an additional Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) specifically for the children of military personnel, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today.

Discussions will be held with the Defence Ministry to identify a suitable location for the new MRSM, and determine whether one of four MRSM campuses that have yet to begin operations can be used for this purpose instead of building a new one, he said.

“There are MRSMs dedicated to the children of officers and members of the Malaysian armed forces.

"But I am determined, (to have) one more MRSM (for the military children),” he said in his speech during his work visit to Kem Mahkota, one of the biggest military camps in Johor.

There are estimated to be more than 3,000 Mahkota voters in the camp.

So far, there is only one MRSM for children of those in the military − MRSM Terendak located in Malacca.

Zahid also said that he has instructed all 57 MRSMs nationwide to teach students from Form One upwards to memorise verses from the Quran.

Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin, who was present, brought up a work-based learning programme for military personnel which he recently announced.

“The Defence Ministry has drafted and planned for those who have only SPM, but based on their service, skills and experience throughout their military career, that they will leave (the military) with at least a diploma," he said in his speech.

For example, a cook will receive a diploma in culinary arts, he explained.

Universiti Teknologi Mara and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia have agreed to offer 10 academic programmes to military personnel, he added.

It was previously reported that the diploma would be given to those with at least 10 years of service.

Khaled announced the programme four days ago, revealing that it is part of efforts to ensure that military personnel remain involved in nation-building after retirement. - Mkini
