MAHKOTA POLLS | Muda acting president Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz has reiterated the party’s stand to not participate in the ongoing by-election, amid speculation they would support Perikatan Nasional.
Without naming names, Amira cited news reports of a politician who sparked the rumours surrounding Muda’s help for PN in Mahkota.
In response, the Puteri Wangsa assemblyperson said her focus for Muda, after nearly a year since taking over the leadership role from Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, remains on strengthening the party.
“I understand there are questions raised over Muda’s participation as part of a political bloc, but to be honest, if there are developments in these matters, certainly I would have arranged for an official announcement to be made.
“For the time being, there has been no discussion on this matter,” she said.
Last night, the presence of a Muda grassroots member at a PN ceramah in Taman Ilham, Kluang, Johor, raised questions about the party’s political direction.
Speaking at the ceramah, PN information chief Azmin Ali claimed the Muda member, who was wearing a party vest, was helping PN’s campaign for the Mahkota by-election.
He also claimed Muda offered to reach out to some 52 percent of Mahkota voters who are youths, ahead of the Sept 28 polls.
According to Harakahdaily, Azmin also said Muda’s decision to assist PN was conveyed to him by a representative of Amira.
Open to negotiations
Meanwhile, Muda secretary-general Amir Abdul Hadi said the decision to sit out of the by-election was jointly decided by the party’s state executive committee.
“Muda will focus on rebuilding the party after going through a series of elections, recent developments, as well as preparations to hold a party election.
“Therefore, there is no discussion or commitment to assist any parties in the ongoing by-election.
“Muda is open to holding discussions and negotiations with any party, but it must first be decided at the level of the central executive committee,” he added.
On Muda’s prior collaborations with other parties, it formed an electoral pact with Pakatan Harapan before the 15th general election in 2022 and worked with PSM to avoid seat clashes in the 2023 state elections.
Last September, Syed Saddiq withdrew his support for Harapan and moved to sit on the opposition bench in the Dewan Rakyat. - Mkini
