Meta’s removal of independent fact-checking on its platforms will not affect Malaysian social media users anytime soon, says communications minister Fahmi Fadzil.

In a report by Bernama, he also said Meta had yet to contact him, his deputy Teo Nie Ching or the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to discuss the matter.

“However, the ministry will be contacting Meta to learn more about the issue,” he told reporters at the ministry today.

Yesterday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said it would replace fact-checking with a Community Notes model not unlike that introduced by Twitter (now known as X) in 2021.

The company will also reduce censorship and boost political content on its Facebook, Instagram and Threads platforms.

Fahmi said the crowdsourcing-based concept of Community Notes had its benefits, including the public being able to comment and contribute explanations on content uploaded to Facebook.

“And (these explanations) would be highlighted, instead of being buried in the comments section,” he said. - FMT
