IT WOULD seem that a new and advanced scamming method is in town, although this has not been verified.
According to a vigilante on tiktok, people may find their water supply being locked off by a mechanism with a barcode attached.
Upon scanning the barcode, he claimed that the victim will lose all his money, whether from the bank or from his or her Touch ‘n Go eWallet.
Netizen JalalMisai who posted the video added that it was normal for Air Selangor to place a barcode there, having been used since several years back to notify when there is a water cut.
“But these scammers are too smart. They put their own barcode there. If you want to be safe, just down the app to verify the status of your water supply. Don’t scan it straight away,” said JalalMisai.
He continued, stating that now most people in Selangor use the smart meter, that the status of their water supply and meter reading are all updated in the app.
“If there is no water cut, your water supply dies and someone places a barcode there, don’t just scan it,” he said.
However, netizen Astu was sceptical about this new scam. “If it was that easy, the scammers will change the QR code at the eateries to their QR,” he said.
LaPaiq also expressed disbelief at this new scamming method. “Not sure just scanning the qr code can immediately get all your information.
Unless you blindly key-in your info without checking the site’s validity,” he said.
No further information could be derived from the purported scam, as no victims have came forth to lodge a report or make a statement. — Focus Malaysia
