KUALA LUMPUR: The Urban Renewal Bill has been in development for over 10 years, with no suggestion that original landowners will be forcibly evicted from their land or premises, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
During Prime Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today, Anwar (PH-Tambun) said that the original land status, whether it is Malay Reserve Land or any other existing status, would remain unchanged.
"Since 2012, guidelines for urban renewal have been introduced. In 2013, they were refined, and by 2015, the process of drafting the bill began. Therefore, concerns about the bill being rushed are unfounded.
"For context, in 2020, the former Federal Territories Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa, led the urban renewal programme, particularly for housing projects over 20 years old.
"In 2021, then Housing Minister Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin initiated the drafting of the bill, and this was reaffirmed by the minister who succeeded her, Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican," he said. - NST
