THE adopted child of Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim, affectionately called Ruslina, reportedly suffers from depression after being cyberbullied on TikTok.
The harassment stemmed from a supporter of a rival party, who mocked Steven for allegedly not aiding Ruslina after an accident, claiming Permatang Pauh MP Muhammad Fawwaz Mohamad Jan stepped in with a RM100 donation instead.
Ruslina’s father, Rusli Ahmad, a security guard, said the public criticism caused his family emotional distress, especially as Ruslina remains bedridden.
Humiliated, Rusli returned Fawwaz’s donation. Though the TikTok user deleted their account, Rusli plans to pursue legal action against them.
The video, allegedly by a PAS supporter, claimed the girl received aid from Fawwaz, not Sim, prompting Sim’s special officer, Rosly Yusof, to confirm the refund via Facebook.
Sim slammed the opposition for targeting his adopted child, who receives RM200 monthly via the “YB’s Adopted Child” programme for her studies in Melaka, vowing legal action.
Steven Sim had a week ago, condemned a netizen, suspected to be a political party member, for insulting his adopted daughter on social media.
The Penang DAP chairman, in an X post, said he could tolerate personal attacks but urged moderation, decrying the defamation of the teenager he adopted last September.
