PETALING JAYA
Amanah has urged the government to immediately implement comprehensive sex and moral education, including at the primary school level, in response to the rise in sexual crimes involving minors.

Its secretary-general, Faiz Fadzil, cited a recent case where Kelantan police detained an 11-year-old boy who allegedly impregnated his 15-year-old cousin – an incident he described as a clear sign of worsening moral decay.

Faiz said such cases highlight the shortcomings of both the education system and existing laws in protecting the younger generation.

“The laws are insufficient. Moral and sex education must be strengthened to develop students intellectually, physically, and spiritually,” he said in a statement.

Faiz stressed the need for a more open approach to the issue, particularly within the Malay community, which often regards sex education as taboo.

“Out-of-wedlock pregnancies are far more harmful and clearly go against religious teachings. Sex education is not about promoting liberalism, it’s about responsibility,” he said.

He also questioned the effectiveness of religious education in states like Kelantan, which continue to face serious moral issues, and called on religious leaders and the government to work together to address the matter.

“It is time we abandon narrow thinking and move towards reform guided by knowledge and the higher objectives of Islamic law (maqasid syariah),” he said.

Kelantan police chief Yusoff Mamat previously said the boy, who had allegedly raped his cousin, was detained to assist in an investigation.

He also revealed a 22.3% increase in the number of reported rape and incest cases involving children in Kelantan, from 206 in 2023 to 252 this year. - FMT
