BARISAN Nasional (BN) faces a turbulent start in the Ayer Kuning by-election, set for April 26, despite confidence in retaining the seat.
BN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi dismissed rumours of discord within the Tapah UMNO Youth wing, which was accused of resisting support for candidate Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir, an older figure compared to their preferred choice.
“There is no boycott from Tapah UMNO Youth chief Fahmi Ahmad Jakhisi.
“He has been present at every meeting, whether at the state or divisional level,” Zahid assured reporters after nominations at Dewan Merdeka, emphasising youth mobilisation for Yusri.
Meanwhile, MIC leader M Saravanan highlighted unrest among Indian voters, a key demographic, frustrated by controversies involving figures like Zamri Vinoth and Firdaus Wong Wai Hung, who stirred sensitive issues.
“There are quite a number of people who are not happy, and I understand why,” Saravanan said, hinting at “hidden hands” fuelling political manipulation. He remains optimistic, citing the Indian community’s discernment and BN’s local ties.
BN’s campaign avoids large rallies, focusing on direct voter engagement to counter opposition narratives. Yusri faces Perikatan Nasional’s Abd Muhaimin Malek and Parti Sosialis Malaysia’s Bawani KS in a three-way race.
Despite internal and community challenges, BN banks on Yusri’s promise to continue development for victory. — Focus Malaysia
