The Sin Chew Daily has conducted a thorough internal review into the mistake involving the Jalur Gemilang, and the staff responsible will be subjected to disciplinary action.
Without disclosing details of the action, the daily said its editorial department has enhanced its review procedures, particularly in the use of artificial intelligence.
“We pledge to be extra cautious and sensitive in handling matters that may harm national dignity and interracial relations,” the daily said in a statement issued this evening.
Earlier today, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar chastised the Chinese-language newspaper over the error. His Majesty stated that the newspaper’s management and editors should have been more diligent in checking materials before going to print.
The royal rebuke followed Sin Chew Daily’s Tuesday edition, which featured a front-page illustration of a jong bearing both the Malaysian and Chinese flags to coincide with Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Malaysia. However, the Malaysian flag was missing a crescent moon.
The newspaper has since apologised and attributed the mistake to a “technical error”. It has corrected the illustration in the digital edition and republished the amended version in today’s print edition.
The daily said its management unreservedly acknowledges Sultan Ibrahim’s advice. - Mkini
