Storm causes damage to more than 50 homes in 2 Perak districts

IPOH: Heavy rain and strong winds swept through the Perak Tengah district and the Larut, Matang and Selama district late this afternoon, damaging more than 50 homes and felling trees.

The Perak Disaster Management Committee Secretariat said in a statement that the storm struck between 4.30pm and 6.30pm, affecting six villages in Perak Tengah and seven residential areas in Larut, Matang and Selama.

The affected villages in Perak Tengah were Kampung Seberang Perak, Kampung Pasir Jenderis, Kampung Kepala Pulau, Kampung Pulau Besar, Kampung Gajah and Kampung Pasir Salak.

In Larut, Matang and Selama, the impacted areas included Jalan Pengkalan Cemerlang, Taman Medan Pengkalan, Taman Damai, Pengkalan Air, Taman Pengkalan Cemerlang, Kampung Pak Darus, and Kampung Batu 2½.

"A temporary relief centre has been opened at SK Sungai Jejawi in Teluk Intan (Perak Tengah) to accommodate affected residents.

"The Perak Tengah district operations control centre received information about the incident from the district's Disaster Management Committee at 6.19pm.

"By 6.30pm, 25 personnel from the Civil Defence Force had been deployed to the affected areas to assist in clearing fallen trees and provide support to residents," the statement said.

In Larut, Matang and Selama, a temporary relief centre had also been opened at the Taman Kaya multipurpose hall for displaced residents.

"No injuries have been reported so far and authorities are continuing their assessment of the damage," it added. - NST
