PETALING JAYA:
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim must respond to calls for reforms if he hopes to secure another term, says an anti-corruption advocate.

Speaking at a public forum here, Edmund Terence Gomez said this was especially crucial as the 16th general election (GE16) is expected in the next two years.

The Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism chairman also credited civil society for pushing key reforms such as Undi18 and the anti-party hopping law, calling NGOs a force to be reckoned with.

Gomez also urged academics, lawyers and students to continue pressuring the government to implement key reforms.

“Without public pressure, don’t expect meaningful change. We’re stuck in a system that protects those in power,” he said.

GE16 is constitutionally due by Feb 17, 2028.

On Tuesday, Anwar defended the pace of reforms under his administration, saying meaningful change takes time and requires broad political support.

He said he was doing his best within the constraints of a coalition government, adding that the support of partners such as Gabungan Parti Sarawak and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah was critical in implementing national programmes. - FMT
