Johor wants tech commune in Forest City probed over alleged Israeli links

The Johor government has asked authorities to investigate a tech commune in Forest City - dubbed the Network School - over allegations that Israelis with dual citizenship are living there.

The Network School is a private residential and co-working community, launched in 2024 by tech investor Balaji Srinivasan.

It's aimed at so-called "techno-optimists" and charges US$1,500 (RM6,118.50) a month for accommodation, meals, and services including gym access.

It became the subject of scrutiny around the time of the Johor state election after social media allegations emerged that Israelis using the passports of their second citizenship were among those living at the commune.

In a statement today, Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the state has asked the Home Ministry, Immigration Department, police, Customs Department, and other agencies to look into the nationalities of those involved and determine whether they are using second passports.

Onn also wants checks on whether the foreign nationals staying at the commune are complying with their entry visas.

In addition to this, the menteri besar also called on the Higher Education Ministry and the Digital Ministry to look into the Network School.

This is despite the commune not appearing to provide any education service or position itself as an institute of higher learning.

At the state level, Onn said the Iskandar Puteri City Council and the land office will check if the Forest City tech commune complies with all local laws and will take action if they do not. - Mkini
