No snap GE, PM tells Dewan; Azalina refers FOI Bill to PSSC

GE16

  • Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has dismissed speculation of a snap general election, warning all parties against overconfidence.

In response to a question from Rosol Wahid (PN-Hulu Terengganu), Anwar expressed his belief that voters wanted stability and economic growth, not mere politicking.

“Give us the time we have to fulfil our mandate until the next election - then we can fight it out. I have no problem with that.

“I don’t want to be overconfident, and I don’t think Hulu Terengganu should be too confident either,” he told the Dewan Rakyat today.

Rosol had asked whether Anwar was mulling a parliamentary dissolution to make way for an election, claiming this would “ensure” economic and political stability.

FOI Bill

  • Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said has referred the Freedom of Information Bill 2026 to a parliamentary special select committee. She tabled a motion in the Dewan Rakyat this afternoon, supported by her deputy, M Kulasegaran.

The committee will propose any necessary amendments to the bill within the next three months, which may be extended if needed, she said.

This follows extensive pushback from civil society organisations and the Malaysian Media Council as the bill restricts access to information and preserves the controversial Official Secrets Act 1972. - Mkini
