A restaurant worker from India, who has spent the past three years working in Malaysia, has made an emotional plea for help to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, claiming torture by his employers.
In a tearful video appeal that has gained attention in Tamil Nadu media, the man, who identified himself as Chinnarasu (above) from a village in Kallakurichi, begged Vijay to intervene and help bring him home.
“I came to Malaysia for work three years ago. As I was preparing to return to (Tamil Nadu), they brought me here, made a false accusation (against me), and are torturing me.
“You are the one who must rescue me. Please save me,” he said in the video, an excerpt of which was shared by local Tamil news portal Vanakam Malaysia.
Vanakam Malaysia reported that Chinnarasu arrived in Malaysia in 2023 to work at a restaurant and is now claiming that he has been held against his will and subjected to torture by his employers.
His parents have also reportedly made an emotional appeal through Indian media, pleading for help to bring their son back home.
Whereabouts unknown
However, Vanakam Malaysia said there is currently no information on Chinnarasu’s whereabouts or further details surrounding his claims.
Vijay, the actor-turned-politician, pulled off a stunning upset in the Tamil Nadu state election in May, with his two-year-old political party sweeping aside the two long-established parties that have alternated in power for decades.
Human rights advocates have said that underlying pressures, including poor working and living conditions such as long hours, recruitment debt, cramped housing, fear of termination, and limited grievance channels, continue to affect migrant workers.
There have also been reports on migrant workers in Malaysia facing systematic exploitation and severe labour rights abuses.
In May, the Human Resources Ministry said it is refining reforms to address labour rights abuses and financial pressures. - Mkini
