He said rapid advances in artificial intelligence (AI), digitalisation and computing required dakwah (Islamic preaching) institutions and related bodies to adapt their approaches while remaining grounded in values, morality and wisdom.
"We must make full use of technological advances to carry out dakwah more effectively, engage with wisdom and draw on knowledge to build support, understand one another and appreciate differences.
"The voice of dakwah must be a voice of wisdom, not one that creates anxiety," he said in his speech at the closing ceremony of the International Waqf and Dakwah Convention 2026.
Anwar said challenges in the post-colonial world, including Islamophobia, demanded a more dynamic approach to dakwah that could effectively address perceptions and misconceptions about Islam.
He said technology should therefore be fully harnessed to strengthen outreach efforts, particularly in engaging younger generations and the global community.
However, he cautioned that technological progress without values and morality could erode humanity.
Anwar also urged educational institutions to continuously update their curricula in line with technological developments to produce graduates equipped with skills relevant to industry needs.
"AI, new technology, information technology and computing without values and morality will erode humanity.
"That is why, while we reach for the skies through technology, we must remain firmly rooted in faith, morality, culture, language and identity," he said.
Anwar also called for waqf institutions to be strengthened as catalysts for education, research and dakwah, including through the use of digital technology to broaden their impact on society.
He added that the longstanding waqf tradition, which had helped develop educational and research institutions across the Muslim world, should serve as a model for strengthening the development of the ummah and the nation. - NST
