KUALA LUMPUR:
Police have opened a disciplinary investigation paper against 12 officers and personnel alleged to have extorted RM2 million from a Vanuatu national.

Bukit Aman integrity and standards compliance department (JIPS) director Aida Abdul Hamid said the action was taken in parallel with an ongoing investigation by the criminal investigation department.

She said the JIPS investigation would focus on integrity matters to determine whether the officers had breached the code of conduct under the Public Officers (Conduct and Discipline) Regulations 1993, based on the findings of the CID investigation.

“JIPS will also examine weaknesses in supervision and the possibility of abuse of power, ethical violations or misconduct that could tarnish the image of the force,” she said when contacted here today.

She said a decision on whether the officers should be suspended from duty would be considered based on developments in the CID and JIPS investigations, in accordance with the applicable regulations.

Yesterday, Dang Wangi police chief Sazalee Adam confirmed the arrest of 12 police personnel of various ranks after they were suspected of extorting RM2 million from a Vanuatu national. - FMT
