Corruption in Malaysia weaponised to discredit rivals, claims Hadi

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang claims that corruption in Malaysia has been frequently weaponised to discredit political rivals, leading to selective prosecution.

“Political rivals are targeted while misconduct within one’s own ranks is overlooked,” he said in his keynote address at the party’s muktamar this morning.

He cited issues related to Tabung Haji (TH), which were highlighted in a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) report.

He said while there had been shortcomings in the management of public funds and government-linked companies, such matters should be brought before the courts instead of being tried by the media.

“Certainly not weaponised as campaign fodder to create prejudice, as it was with the TH case,” he added.

The RCI report on TH was declassified and released in July.

It found serious weaknesses in the fund’s governance, investment and financial management between 2014 and 2020, and recommended a major overhaul, including tighter oversight, forensic audits of selected investments and limits on political involvement in the institution.

Several prominent politicians have since been arrested by the anti-graft agency in its probe into irregularities in the pilgrims’ fund.

Last month, Hadi alleged that the TH issue had been blown out of proportion to give Malay-Muslims a bad name.

He said even more concerning was the “precarious” position of Islam and the Muslim community under the Pakatan Harapan government, which he claimed was dominated by “non-Muslim factions” and posed a threat to the objectives of Islamic law.
