Bersama to unveil alternative 2027 budget ahead of Anwar's tabling

Bersama will unveil its 2027 shadow budget on Oct 6, positioning it as an alternative to the federal budget to be tabled by Prime Minister and Finance Minister Anwar Ibrahim three days later.

Bersama co-leader Rafizi Ramli said the shadow budget would allow the public to assess whether the party’s policy proposals are financially viable.

“If we see the norm in Malaysia, (election) manifestos do not elaborate on the financing.

“There is no element of costing. They will just announce they want to do this and that,” said the former economy minister during a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Puchong today.

“In other countries, there is typically an independent body that evaluates the policies.

“But because there are none in Malaysia, political parties are free to make their promises,” he added.

The Kancil Papers

As such, Rafizi said Bersama’s proposals will be set out in a series of policy papers called the “Kancil Papers”, with the first instalment scheduled for Sept 27.

The second will be released on Oct 24, followed by the third on Nov 28.

Rafizi also announced the first six members of Bersama’s Policy Panel, which will independently review and provide feedback on the party’s policy positions.

Each Kancil Paper will first undergo review by the panel, followed by stakeholder consultations, before the final draft is opened for public feedback.

The six panel members are Brunei’s Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University astrofiqh and muamalat expert Ibnor Azli Ibrahim, internal medicine and elderly care consultant Dr Feizal Fakurruddin, former MDEC chairperson and MRANTI CEO Rais Hussin Ariff, former Sedar executive director Khoo Kay Peng, former Institut Aminuddin Baki lecturer Hamidon Abdul Rahman, and former Bank Negara officer John Lee. - Mkini
