MACC probing allegations against Taib

The commission's chief Abu Kassim Mohamed says that MACC probes all complaints without fear or favour.

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is investigating all complaints that have been lodged against Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud.

“We investigate all cases, we do this without fear or favour,” MACC Chief Commissioner Abu Kassim Mohamed told FMT today.

He added that the commission would uphold its duty under the law to investigate all corruption cases.

However, Abu Kassim declined to answer when asked specifically if an investigation had been launched on Taib himself.

“I cannot say anyone specifically. But this is MACC’s principle, we investigate all reports. That is our job given to us under the law,” he said.

Yesterday, a Sarawak citizens initiative – the Movement for Change Sarawak (MoCS) – warned that it would take to the streets if MACC did not probe the chief minister.

Asked if he agreed with the anti-graft watchdog Transparency International Malaysia that handouts during elections are considered bribes, Abu Kassim said that he had already given his answer.

He was referring to an online news portal which quoted him as saying, “If there are allegations, MACC will investigate.”

Numerous complaints have been filed against the chief minister and various civil society groups have called for MACC to hasten their investigations.

Yesterday, Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar lodged a report with the MACC urging the watchdog to investigate election pledges in Sarawak.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz had earlier this week said that election handouts were not considered corruption. - FMT
