Amid a general sense of dejection and disappointment after Barisan Nasional managed to cling on to power, PAS president Tuan Guru Abdul Hadi Awang urged Pakatan Rakyat supporters to accept the results of the general election with patience and gratitude.
"I wish to express my gratitude to all Malaysians who have voted for PAS and Pakatan Rakyat.
"Let us accept the results with patience and gratitude. Have the conviction that Allah's promise will surely be fulfilled," Hadi wrote on his Facebook page.
Hours earlier, speaking after the results were announced, Hadi said true believers would be patient in the face of adversity.
"In every struggle, there are losers and winners. If there had been fraud, remember, the Hereafter will judge on our behalf. Do not forget that there is a higher Government, that of Almighty Allah.
"We have not been defeated. It is just that we have yet to win," he said.
In yesterday's polls, PAS won 22 parliamentary seats, a seat less than in 2008. The BN managed to cling on to Federal power with less seats, but lost disastrously in the heavily targeted states of Selangor, Penang and Kelantan. The UMNO-dominated government will also see no participation from its Chinese-only component MCA, whose performance fulfilled earlier predictions of a 'wipe-out' for the party.
In Terengganu, where Hadi retained both state and parliamentary seats, PAS managed to win additional three parliamentary and seven state assembly seats. However, BN managed to get the additional one seat needed to form the state government on a simple majority.
