Maybank president and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar, who was yesterday announced as Minister in the Prime Minister's Department in the new cabinet line-up, wants to help take the Malaysian economy to a higher level of excellence.
Abdul Wahid who will be responsible for the Economic Planning Unit, intends to apply his experience in the corporate sector to his new job which he said, would have a wider area of focus.
"Allow me to learn about this portfolio first and its areas of responsibility and I will take it from there.
"Based on my experience in steering a corporate company, one would need meticulous planning from the economic aspect, corporate strategy and so on. I will try to apply all these in the portfolio given to me."
Abdul Wahid was speaking to reporters after witnessing the presentation of appointment letters and taking of the oath of office and oath of secrecy by federal ministers and deputy ministers at Istana Negara, here, today.
Abdul Wahid, who has been helming Maybank since May 1, 2008, will take his oath of office as a senator on June 5. Regarding his new task as very challenging, he said: "I will do it to the best of my ability."
Asked on his prospective successor at Maybank, he said it would be decided by the bank's board of directors.
