The ban on the use of ‘Allah’ only applies to The Herald and not to other publications, Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi maintained today.
"Its only for The Herald. There are no restrictions on using the word in AlKitab," he told reporters in the Parliament lobby.
"This is not so much about publications, but more about preserving Islam, so nobody is misled.”
Ahmad Zahid (left) repeatedly insisted that the Court of Appeal's verdict last week that the Herald could not use the word ‘Allah' to refer to God in their publications should "be respected".
"We do not ban the development and practice of other religions but they have to know that the Court of Appeal's decision should be respected. If they are not satisfied with the decision, they can bring it up to the Federal Court.
"The purpose (of the ruling) is to take care of the sensitivities of other religions," he stressed.
After the Court of Appeal's decision last week which was largely criticised by constitutional experts, NGOs and Christian organisations, some government officials, including attorney-generalGani Patail, have come out and insisted that the decision only applies to the Herald publication.
