Giving MACC prosecution powers 'could lead to abuse'

PARLIAMENT The government will not give the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) powers of prosecution as it could lead to “abuse of power”.

NONEDeputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Razali Ibrahim (right) said that this is because giving such powers will mean the MACC will both investigate and charge, “without checks and balances”.

“This could bring about elements of abuse (penganiayaan), where someone who does not deserve to be charged can be charged,” he said during Question Time today.

He was responding to a question by Darell Leiking (PKR-Penampang) who asked why the government does not give prosecution authority to the MACC.
