Umno president Najib Abdul Razak will meet Kelantan Menteri Besar Ahmad Yaakob to discuss the PAS suggestion for dialogues (muzakarah).
Responding to one of the agendas brought up by the PAS muktamar over the weekend, Najib, also prime minister, said today that he is prepared to meet with the PAS leader soon.
"We are open, but we have to see what the scope is. We ask for more elaboration from PAS," Najib said, adding that he has been invited to meet with the Kelantan MB.
Party president Abdul Hadi Awang had reiterated the idea of dialogues on Islamic unity with Umno, particularly on implementing Islamic law and teachings.
Umno had previously rejected the idea, as it would clash with secular rule as stipulated in the federal constitution.
In 1993, the Kelantan government had passed an enactment providing for hudud law, but implementation has been delayed because enforcement would require an amendment to the federal constitution.
Najib was speaking to reporters after accrediting 29 members of the National Unity Consultative Council.
This is a government initiative first announced in June and aimed at fostering ties the different ethnic communities in Malaysia.
Its members mainly comprise retired senior civil servants, politicians and civil rights activists.
