Umno president Najib Abdul Razak today apparently sought to defend his wife Rosmah Mansor's controversial flight on a government jet, sharing with delegates her role in helping Malaysians in Ops Piramid unbeknown to the people.
Najib said he knows that being a politician, he and his wife are subject to attacks by the opposition.
"We know she played a role in the Permata programme. But what I am about to relate is something that I have not mentioned before.
"First, one of our students had been detained by the Egypt authorities for allegations of being a spy.
"My wife, who got to know this, helped and called then Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak's wife (Suzanne Mubarak). Within two hours, the student was released," he said.
On another occasion, Najib said as Malaysian students had difficulty in flying out of Egypt, she again helped by calling the wife of a member of the Saudi authority for assistance.
Through her networking, the Saudi government prepared two jumbo jets and brought our students to Riyadh, although they did not have a visa to be in Saudi Arabia."
This, Najib said, was the role played by Rosmah (right) that people had not known about till now.
Rosmah has been criticised for using a government executive jet for her personal trip to the Middle East last month.
During the general assembly, Federal Territories delegate Affandi Zahari tried to justify Rosmah's use of government facilities saying her safety would give the PM "peace of mind". -
