MCMC coming down hard over insults to late ruler

Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is hunting down those who have posted up comments deemed insulting to the royal institution, especially regarding the late Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah on social media.

“We are tracking down these individuals and appeal to the members of public who may have information that could help our investigation to come forward,” commission chairperson Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi said.

He added, in a statement, the MCMC viewed the matter seriously and action will be taken against those responsible under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Sultan Azlan Shah, who had reigned as Yang di-Pertuan Agong from 1989 to 1994, passed away at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday at the age of 86.

The late ruler’s eldest son, the Regent of Perak Raja Nazrin Shah, 58, was yesterday proclaimed the new Sultan of Perak.
