TELUK INTAN The mother of DAP’s Teluk Intan candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud has responded to criticism over her Perkasa membership, saying it has no bearing on her daughter’s candidacy in the coming by-election.
According to Yammy Samat (left), this is because smart people know they are voting for Dyana, and not Dyana’s mother.
"I am an Umno member and a Perkasa member, so what? What's the problem?" she asked, adding that Dyana was never part of the Malay right-wing group.
"Dyana is the one contesting, and she's the one you vote for, not me.
“If all these online bloggers attack her, so be it. Smart people know how to differentiate (between Dyana and her mother)," Yammy said at the sideline of a Pakatan Rakyat ceramah last night at the Anson Industrial Park, which attracted a 2,500-strong crowd.
This is Yammy’s first appearance on her daughter’s campaign trail since allegations surfaced last week that she was the first Wanita chief of Perkasa, known at times for its extremist views on Islam and Malay rights.
Yammy said she will now stay on for the remainder of the campaign period until polling day.
Dyana Sofya had previously denied the allegation regarding her mother's link to Perkasa.
She, however, yesterday admittedYammy’s involvement in Perkasa, stating she had helped her mother conduct a membership registration for the group back in 2008 when still studying.
Coming to her daughter’s defence, Yammy last night said the only time Dyana attended a Perkasa's function was to pin a rosette on former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali.
She said Dyana disliked Perkasa and refrained from joining the organisation.
Yammy said she herself became less active in the group after it became more political and seemed to take orders from Umno.
As to her daughter’s candidature in the coming polls, Yammy predicts Dyana has an 80 percent chance of clinching the seat based on the ground support Dyana has attracted.
