FREE YOURSAY ‘Another 100 years of NEP will not help the Malay poor.’
Minister: Land where Malays not welcomed
Mushiro: After more than 40 years of New Economic Policy (NEP), with nearly 100 percent of PTPTN (National Education Fund) going to Malay students, Umno has failed miserably to uplift the Malays, including those in Penang.
But every Umno division chairperson in Penang and their office bearers are multimillionaires. What does it tell us?
Umno officials everywhere have been busy taking every advantage of the NEP for their own selves and their families. Another 100 years of NEP will not help with such insincere Umno Malay leaders.
Penang Malays were neglected by Umno during the time of Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and even Najib Razak.
A bumi-lot house is not what Malay look forward to. It is in fact a big disadvantage which Communication and Multimedia Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek is not even aware. Prices of bumi lots remain low and difficult to resell.
Shabery Cheek and Umno do not know what the Malays need and they are really not interested to help the Malays. They are in fact a curse to the Malays.
But now that the Umno general assembly is just two weeks away, racism can serve as a good distraction. Malays will be fooled again and again by Umno, especially at their GA, just so that an elite few will remain rich.
Fire_rock: Yes, the circus is coming to town. Expect the same old racial rhetoric agenda which has been going on for the last 50 years. No vision, no direction and no solution on how the country is going to move forward.
What you will see is a demand for monopolies and a mad grab for projects and contracts.
SSDhaliwal: Special privileges for the Malays are nothing more than billion dollar contracts to bumiputera cronies while the average man gets BR1M.
In the 40 years of NEP, all we see are some enterprising Malays becoming billionaires while the rest, especially the rural folk, are even more dependent on handouts from the government.
In short, instead of teaching them how to fish so they can eat for life, Umno has been giving them the fish in order to keep them dependent. This is what keeps Umno alive.
Anonymous$&@?: Why am I not surprise by such stupidity coming from an Umno minister? He is just slapping himself on the face, highlighting Umno’s failure for past 50-plus years of Malay leadership.
After five decades of Malay special rights, most Malays remain poor. To all the Malays, don't you think it’s about time to change Malay leadership since Umno has failed you?
Slumdog: Here we go again, the poor, deprived and bullied Malays are supposedly missing out, this time on affordable housing.
Despite everything, I mean everything, given to the Malays over the last few decades, Shabery Cheek has the cheek to complain. He hasn’t even got the courage to back up his comments by naming the state or party concerned but instead talks in riddles and innuendos
JooGuan: If race-based policy is working, not only the Malays but Indians and others should be enjoying a better living standard by now.
Such a policy has enriched carpetbaggers instead of benefiting the needy. Look around the top 1,000 richest Malaysians, how many of them are without political background?
Boom Boom Pow!: Perhaps the minister needs to take a refresher course in Logic 101. According to him, poor people can't afford expensive houses. Many poor people are Malay. Therefore building expensive houses is racist.
I want to see what kind of house the minister lives in. Hello, if most Malays are poor, it is because you stole all of their money through corruption. Your task should be to help them become rich.
You are talking as if there are no poor Chinese or Indians. Penang helps the poor, regardless of race. If you want to see less of a particular race on welfare, do something to help them.
Indeed, if you make these kinds of stupid statements in the United States, you will be pilloried by your own race.
Ex-PJ: Mr Cheek, why this sense of entitlement? Always waiting for a handout? No self-respect or pride? These are the questions you should ask your racist self.
Perhaps the government should start a school system where grades are awarded on the basis of race, then you'll see how far it will get you in this competitive world.
Multi Racial: This shows Umno leaders are getting desperate so much so they are prepared to lie to win support. I believe Malaysians are not blind and stupid. You cannot continuously lie to them thinking they will not know.
The first step to national unity is to purge all those racist leaders from the Umno leadership. Promote the moderate leaders and you will see how different things can be.
Baiyuensheng: People can now see Umno is incapable of making economic policies changes that would uplift the country. They have run out of ideas.
All Umno can do now is complaining about not getting government projects and playing up on racial and religious issues to sow fear among the Malay populace.
Even their upcoming Umno conference is an agenda full of pettiness and on nonsensical matters, such as the debate on vernacular schools.
CiViC: I can't believe what I just read. Shabery Cheek needs a dictionary to tell him what racism is because he has just argued that being racist is not racism, but instead commenting on racism is racist. -Mkini
