Jahid Jahim says move should be carried out via transparent screening to ensure only those eligible be issued new identity cards.
KOTA KINABALU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) welcomes the readiness of the Sabah National Registration Department (NRD) to re-issue identity cards (ICs) in the state if the matter is decided by the committee studying the report of the Royal Commission of Inquiry on Illegal Immigrants in Sabah.
Its information chief Jahid Jahim said the move should be carried out via transparent screening to ensure only those eligible would be issued new identity cards.
“Special focus should also be given to identity card holders who applied using letters of affirmation as there are doubts on this category of applicants.
“For genuine cases, it can be verified by the Native Courts,” he said in a statement here today.
He was commenting on a statement by Sabah NRD director, Ismail Ahmad who said the department was prepared to re-issue identity cards in Sabah if the government decided to do so and that NRD had sufficient manpower to implement this.
