Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was adamant from the beginning that the "red shirt" rally last Wednesday must not offend other races or go against any laws, Umno Supreme Council member Tan Sri Annuar Musa said today.
Annuar, who was adviser to the rally, said Najib called him multiple times before September 16 to ensure the rally would not get out of hand.
"Najib did not want it to be held in the city. He did not want other races to be hurt. He was very concerned," Annuar told reporters at the Majlis Amanah Rakyat's (Mara) headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
Annuar said Najib knew he could not stop the rally from taking place and wanted to ensure its organisers had it under control.
He said it was unfair to blame Najib for the rally, as the prime minister had no hand in organising it.
