Nik Aziz's son joins Amanah

A son of former PAS musyidul am the late Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat has been announced as the chairperson of PAS-splinter, Parti Amanah Negara's Kelantan syariah panel.

This was announced by Kelantan Amanah communications director Nordin Hussin at a dinner in Petaling Jaya tonight.

Nik Omar Nik Aziz (photo) was introduced along with the rest of the nascent leadership line-up of Kelantan Amanah.

However, he was absent from the gathering.

When met to confirm the matter later however, Nordin denied his earlier announcement.

"There is no such thing as Nik Aziz's son joining Amanah. You must have misheard," he contended.

However, the confusion with regards to the announcement was resolved when Malaysiakini contacted a senior leader in Kelantan Amanah.

The source confirmed that the former Kelantan MB's son had indeed joined Amanah, though for the moment he is keeping a low profile and will refrain from attending any public events.

This, the party insider said, was to honour his family's request.

"But he will attend internal meetings, it is just that he will avoid the spotlight in public events like this."

'Mother's wishes'

Nik Omar's desire to keep a low profile, explained the source who declined to be named, is due to the wishes of his mother Tuan Sabariah Tuan Ishak.

"In any case, it is his mother's wishes. After all, (amongst the brothers) one is in PAS and another in Amanah."

The source related that out of all the sons of Nik Aziz, it is Nik Omar who is most like his father in many ways.

Nik Omar is the second out of the late Nik Aziz's 10 children.

Prior to this he had been said to have joined Amanah, but he later denied it.

His more well-known younger brother, Nik Abduh, the fifth son of Nik Aziz, is PAS Youth chief and Pasir Mas parliamentarian.

As at the time of reporting, Malaysiakini has contacted Nik Omar to confirm the news, and is still awaiting his reply. -Mkini
