Selangor to safeguard state awards

The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, said today he hoped that the proposed amendments by the state government to the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Enactment 1962 would address the unauthorised use of state titles and honours.
He said he had been informed that the proposed amendments would include imposing a higher penalty on those convicted of offences under the enactment.
“I hope that the proposed bill, to be tabled at the current sitting, will curb the immoral and unethical activities as well as protect my sovereignty as the sultan of Selangor,” he said when opening the fourth session of the 13th Selangor state legislative assembly.
Referring to Article 38 of the Selangor state constitution, the ruler said that as the sultan, he alone could confer awards and medals in the state.
However, he said, of late there had been cases of individuals giving, selling and using state awards not recognised by the Selangor palace and the state government.
“The act of giving, selling and using state awards which are not recognised is fraud,” he added.
On another matter, Sultan Sharafuddin said the state government should take proactive measures to ensure that the people and the economy were not adversely affected by any disaster to hit the state, such as extreme hot and dry weather, flash floods and epidemics.
Lembaga Urus Air Selangor, he said, should manage the state’s water resources in a holistic manner by ensuring adequate supply of raw water at all dams to avoid water supply disruption for domestic and industrial consumers.
“I also want the water resources, rivers, coastal waters and their environment to be preserved,” he added.
The sultan also advised Muslims in Selangor to adhere to the teachings of Islam to face the challenges posed by deviant teachings and militancy.
