Stay of execution for student over #TangkapMO1 rally

He threatens to take university to court if charges are not dropped altogether.
Peaceful-Assembly-Act-(2012),-Asheeq-Ali,-#TangkapMO1,-UKM,-illegal-rallyPETALING JAYA: Student activist Asheeq Ali has obtained a stay of execution pending appeal from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) on his suspension and fine for participating in the #TangkapMO1 rally in August.
However, he is determined to see his sentence quashed by UKM and has threatened legal action if they do not lift the suspension.
“I sent an appeal letter and a memorandum two weeks ago to the vice-chancellor to drop the charges against me.
“I know that the appeal process will take time and had requested to the university to postpone my sentence until they have made a decision.”
Asheeq said while he will be allowed to continue his studies, the university could still suspend him if his appeal fails.
The third-year law student received a one-semester suspension after he was found guilty in a hearing with the university’s disciplinary board on Tuesday. He was also fined RM200.
According to Asheeq, the board’s reasoning was that he had embarrassed the university and that he had committed an offence under the Peaceful Assembly Act (2012) by participating in an illegal rally.
The #TangkapMO1 rally was held on Aug 27 in Kuala Lumpur. It was participated mostly by youths under 30, especially university students.
They had demanded the authorities  take action against Malaysian Official One (MO1) named in the US Department of Justice’s (DoJ) civil forfeiture suit in July.
The suit alleged that billions of dollars were embezzled from state-owned 1MDB, a case which the DoJ labelled the biggest kleptocracy incident it has ever dealt with. FMT
