Transport Minister and MCA president Liow Tiong Lai has urged Umno delegates at the party's ongoing annual general assembly to be respectful of the BN mechanism that decides on posts.
He was responding to Umno delegate and Jasin MP Ahmad Hamzah, who suggested yesterday that the transport minister should be someone from Umno.
"We understand that this kind of general assembly is a democratic platform for them to voice their opinions frankly.
"We cannot control it (their opinions) but I think, they should respect the BN mechanism," Liow said when met by reporters after attending a graduation ceremony at SJK Wangsa Maju today.
He said blaming one another within BN will not bring benefit to the coalition.
"I remind all BN component parties, we have to respect each other and be united," he said.
What BN should be focusing on are the preparations for the upcoming general election, he added.
Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak had announced earlier that the next general election would be held "soon", but would not specify a timeline.
Previously, Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein held the Transport Ministry portfolio, after MCA refused to accept any cabinet positions following its poor showing in the 2013 general election.
Besides the Transport Ministry, the only other ministries headed by non-bumiputeras are the Health Ministry held by MIC president Dr S Subramaniam and the Commodities and Plantations Ministry held by Gerakan president Mah Siew Keong.-Mkini
