Appeals court overturns ban on Penang voluntary patrol

The Court of Appeal today overturned the Home Ministry's ban on the Penang Voluntary Patrol (PPS), the Penang government's version of the People's Volunteer Corp (Rela).
A three-member bench unanimously set aside the Penang High Court decision on Nov 22 last year which had upheld the Home Ministry's ban.
The bench, led by Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, also comprised Justices Kamardin Hashim and Mary Lim.
The court also ordered for all materials which the Home Ministry confiscated from PPS to be returned to the organisation.
Penang DAP in a Facebook post hailed the decision, stating that justice prevailed.

When contacted, Penang exco Phee Boon Poh who oversaw the PPS, said the state government is awaiting a report from their lawyers about the victory.
Lawyers Ambiga Sreenevasan and Tommy Thomas acted for the Penang government.
On Aug 31, 2014, Police launched a crackdown on the PPS which participated in the Merdeka parade, arresting 154 volunteers.
Phee was later also arrested and bank accounts and assets belonging to PPS were also frozen.
The Penang government subsequently took the Home Ministry to court.- Mkini
