Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah has said that she will not sack the electoral watchdog's secretariat member Mandeep Karpall Singh after the latter penned an article critical of the opposition.
The article had led Maria to receive messages on social media criticising Mandeep and urging her to sack him.
"That is not happening. What Mandeep wrote is his personal view. He is entitled to his personal opinion. That is not reflective of everyone in Bersih and it is not our press statement.
"I don't know why so many people are jumping up and down about it," she told Malaysiakini today.
A source familiar with the matter alerted Malaysiakini that messages urging for Mandeep to be sacked were posted on social media.
“It is sad that there are those who cannot accept views that challenge their stand. These are the same people who champion freedom of expression and so forth.
“Mandeep has sacrificed so much for this country, having been arrested multiple times for the things he believes in. But now, he is called all sorts of names and people want him sacked from Bersih. It is sad.
“These people do not realise that by reacting this way, it only further cements the points raised by Mandeep in his article,” said the source who declined to be named.
On the same note, the source said there were some Pakatan Haparan MPs who agreed with Mandeep's points and acknowledged the current predicament of the opposition.
In Mandeep's article published two days ago, he had criticised the opposition for being in disarray and without clear leadership.
He had also made it clear that the views put forth were his own and not reflective of Bersih's stand.- Mkini
