Umno Youth, whose members today lodged police reports nationwide against Human Resources Minister M Kulasegaran, has demanded the latter's head to roll.
According to the wing's chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, the DAP lawmaker's apology for his controversial “pendatang” remark was insufficient.
“Although he has apologised, this is not sufficient for us. He should accept responsibility and resign. He is a minister and should have a greater moral responsibility,” he added.
Should Kulasegaran refuse to resign, Asyraf said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad must sack him on the grounds of creating disharmony among the races.
“He (Kulasegaran) should not be making statements which can be considered as seditious and ignite disquiet,” he was quoted as saying by Umno Online.
Asyraf noted how an ordinary citizen by the name of Abdullah Zaid was fined under the Sedition Act when he used the term “pendatang” for the Chinese in the past.
“So we do not want a minister to be let off just like that...,” he added.
Kulasegaran has claimed that his remarks during an event in Nilai last week were misconstrued and denied a Utusan Malaysia report which claimed that he was referring to the Malays.
Despite this, the minister decided to apologise.
"These remarks have been misconstrued to suggest I have used the word 'pendatang' with reference to people who would resent its application to them.
"I hereby unreservedly apologise for the hurt I may have caused and withdraw the offensive references in that extemporaneous speech.
"I am not and have never been a controversialist on issues of race and religion in our country, and will always abide by what has been enshrined in our Federal Constitution," he had said. - Mkini
