Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu has dismissed the need for his aide to go on leave pending a MACC investigation.
“If all those who are investigated have to stop (working), then many would need to stop.
“I myself have been investigated by the police numerous times, but faced only one of two charges (in court). Even those I won,” he told reporters in Kuala Lumpur today.
Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported that Amanah leaders are expected to raise the issue at a leadership meeting next month, and press for the aide to go on leave.
Mohamad, who is better known as Mat Sabu, is the president of Amanah.
"This matter will surely be raised at Amanah's meeting on Sept 4. If Amanah Youth does not raise it, surely other leaders will raise it.
"For now, we ask that he goes on leave," the party's Youth chief Mohd Sany Hamzan told Malaysiakini.
However, Sany stressed that the aide is innocent until proven guilty.
MACC is investigating the aide's bankruptcy status being settled, with payments amounting to RM800,000 being made by various quarters several days after Mohamad was sworn in as defence minister.
The commission is checking whether the debts were settled with the intention to secure projects in return.
MACC has recorded statements from the aide and 10 others, which included defence contractors and business representatives. - Mkini
