Accusations of plagiarism followed the release of the Sukma trailer, which was said to lift directly from the Taipei 2017 Universiade video entitled “Taipei in Motion.”
However, Lee, who chairs the Perak youth, sports and human capital development committee, stressed that the Sukma video is not an "official" trailer.
“It is undeniable that the editing of the trailer for Sukma 2018 Perak is very similar to the advertisement of the Taipei Universiade 2017.
“In any case, the trailer is not an official trailer of the Sukma 2018 Perak,” he told Malaysiakini.
The Taipei 2017 Universiade video, released in June 2017, showed athletes bathed in blue and red hues interspersed with images of the city.
Critics had accused the Sukma 2018 Perak trailer of being conceptually similar, down to the lighting, camera work, editing and sound mixing.
Sukma 2018 Perak is organised by the Perak state government, with Lee's youth, sports and human capital development committee being the main organising team.
'Not enough time'
As Lee explained, the “unofficial” Sukma trailer was rushed out due to insufficient preparation time.
“We faced a pressing schedule to organise Sukma after we (Pakatan Harapan) took over the state government. The preparation time for the trailer is also greatly insufficient.”
“Thus, the organising committee decided to launch an unofficial trailer as a warm-up to the promotion of Sukma 2018 Perak."
Lee, the Pasir Pinji assemblyperson, said that the editing of the “formal and official” trailer is due to be completed shortly, and will be debuted exclusively on state broadcaster RTM.
He also noted that he has apologised to Gavin Yin, the director of the “Taipei in Motion” video, for the similarities.
“I, myself, have contacted Yin and explained the details of the matter to him.
"I gave my deepest apologies to him. Yin has gladly accepted our account of the incident.”
Lee stressed that although the Perak goverment did not directly produce the "unofficial" video, it welcomed all opinions and criticisms with humility nonetheless.
