KUALA LUMPUR: Deaths due to toxic alcohol poisoning rose to 40 today with Negeri Sembilan becoming the latest state to record a death after Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Perak.
Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said two more deaths were reported, one in Perak and Selangor respectively.
He said up to now, the number of deaths from toxic alcohol poisoning in Selangor was 24, Kuala Lumpur (11), Perak (four) and Negeri Sembilan (one).
Based on nationality, the victims comprised two Bangladeshis, two Indian nationals, 11 Myanmar nationals, 10 Nepalese, 11 Malaysians and four others of unknown nationality.
“Up to noon today, the health ministry received 95 notifications of cases of toxic alcohol poisoning from its health facilities with Selangor recording 63 cases, Negeri Sembilan increased by three cases, while Kuala Lumpur and Perak remained at 17 and 12 cases respectively,” he said in a statement.
Noor Hisham said of the total number of patients receiving treatment at hospitals, eight have been discharged.
Seventeen patients are still receiving treatment at six hospitals in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Perak and Negeri Sembilan. Of the 17, seven patients are in critical condition, he said.
“The health ministry will continue to monitor the situation and take the necessary measures,” said Noor Hisham. - FMT
