SABAH Umno today has rubbished a Sabah media report that a large number of its elected representatives are planning abandon the party to become independents.
The party has 11 state assemblymen left after six left to join the ruling Parti Warisan Sabah and PKR, or become independent reps.
Sabah’s Daily Express quoted an Umno source as saying that state liaison chief Hajiji Noor, Salleh Said Keruak and Masidi Manjun as among those who will lead a group of 10 others to abandon Sabah Umno.
The paper cited Umno’s growing unpopularity as the reason for the planned exodus.
Sabah Umno secretary Masidi said the paper was merely speculating so as to keep readers glued to the paper in the next few days.
“I am not going to respond to (the report), which was intended to hit Umno below the belt,” he told The Malaysian Insight.
Talk of Sabah Umno leaders leaving the party have been going around after the mauling the party suffered in the May 9 general election.
Several party insiders point to Sabah Umno’s rejected request for autonomy in September as another reason for likely defections.
Hajiji is expected to address the matter later today.
