IGP: Cops shot amok man in self-defence


JOHOR BAHRU (Bernama): The motorcycle patrol unit (MPU) policeman who shot a man who ran amok in front of a bank at Bandar Bukit Tinggi, Klang, Selangor, on Tuesday (Apr 2) did so in self-defence, says Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun.
The Inspector-General of Police said the incident was unfortunate, but was what police officers and personnel face in the line of duty.
''It was hard for the policeman being attacked to avoid taking action as he was about to be stabbed by the suspect.
"He could have been stabbed to death. So, he had to shoot (the suspect),'' he told reporters after launching the South Zone Royal Malaysian Police Band, here Wednesday (April 3).
Mohamad Fuzi said the policeman, together with other units, gave first aid to the suspect after he was shot.
In the incident at 2pm on Tuesday, the man, who is from Sabah but stayed in Bandar Bukit Tinggi 1, Klang, was injured after he was shot.
The suspect had been unable to withdraw money from the bank's automatic teller machine as therewere no funds in it when he ran amok.
The 41-year-old man was believed to be under the influence of drugs and was found to have previous four records fopr drugs.
The suspect is reported to be in stable condition at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in KLANG.
South Klang district police chief ACP Shamsul Amar Ramli said the suspect was now conscious and able to communicate.
"He is in remand for seven days for investigation under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder," he said. – Bernama.
