39 illegal immigrants arrested in food outlet and hostel raids

PETALING JAYA: A total of 39 illegal immigrants were detained following raids on a food outlet and a workers' hostel in Setia Alam.
Those detained - 36 men and three women - were from India (12), Bangladesh (9), Myanmar (9), Pakistan (5) and the Philippines (4), following the operation which was conducted at about 10.30pm on Tuesday (June 25).
Immigration Department deputy director-general (Operations) Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa said those detained were working as waiters, cooks and cleaners at the premises.
"They were arrested for various offences, including overstaying, no identification documents and abuse of social passes.
"All of them have been brought to the Immigration Detention Depot in Bukit Jalil for further investigations and action," he said.
Initial investigations revealed that the illegal immigrants were staying at a workers' hostel located nearby the premises, he added.
"Some of them even attempted to escape during the raid, but the raiding team was able to cordon off the area.
"The most outrageous of the attempts were climbing out the hostel's windows," he said, adding that 16 Immigration personnel were involved in the operation.
Mohamad Fauzi reminded the public, especially employers, not to harbour illegal immigrants.
"They have to face the consequences if they do so.
"Anyone with information on illegal immigrants should come forward and cooperate with the department," he said.- Star
