KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia can stop those with criminal records from entering the country if there are new formulas, systems and procedures in place, says former KLIA immigration operations chief Shahul Hamid Abdul Rahim.
He said among the systems that can be used is the “Advance Passenger Clearance” which can check the criminal records of foreigners entering Malaysia.
He said the number of foreigners, especially from the African continent, had grown since 1999, adding that there has been an increase in minor and major crimes involving foreigners.
“Now we see many of our citizens arrested and there is always a foreigner involved. This is a threat to our security,” he told Bernama in an interview.
Shahul said the government should adopt a “psychometric” system at airports so that enforcement authorities can find out a foreigner’s real intention in coming to the country.
The psychometric system is a valuation instrument designed to accurately qualify and quantify information about the ability of a person to respond.
“It means that when a passenger goes through the immigration door, we can tell whether he is a genuine traveller or not. Some questions can be asked, and those whose answers cause doubt should not be allowed to enter,” he added.
Immigration statistics show that since 2018, 282 Africans have been arrested for various immigration offences.
Recently, a Nigerian man was charged with the murder of Serdang Hospital nurse Siti Kharina Mohd Kamarudin, whose body was found in a condominium unit near Cyberjaya on May 15. - FMT
