SHAH ALAM: Former prime minister Najib Razak today paid a visit to the Ramadan bazaar at the PKNS Complex here for a walkabout.
Najib arrived at the shopping mall at about 3.30pm amid heavy rain but was warmly greeted by mall patrons with shouts of “Bossku”.
Many, who were caught by surprise at Najib’s presence at the bazaar, quickly took the opportunity to take selfies with the Pekan MP, who was dressed casually in a grey polo T-shirt.
Najib took a leisurely stroll in the packed bazaar from one end to the other. The bazaar was teeming with many shoppers doing last-minute shopping for clothes, cookies as well as buying food to break fast.
He stopped by several outlets to have a look at the items, as well as to mingle and chit-chat with the stall owners.
Najib’s visit was streamed live on Facebook, where he cheekily asked if Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad was around.
“Khalid Samad ada? Saya kat Bazar Kompleks PKNS ni.” (“Is Khalid Samad around? I am here at the PKNS Complex bazaar.”)
Nasir Abdullah told FMT said he was excited to meet Najib, who has been his idol since he was young.
“I did not expect Najib to come here. I got lucky this time, I guess, shaking his hand and taking photos with him,” he said.
As for Roziah Selamat, she could still feel Najib’s aura as a government leader, even though he no longer held any positions in Putrajaya.
“People may be saying a lot of things about Najib. We also see him in and out of the courtroom, but when he goes to the ground, many still follow him and surround him.
“Even though he is facing many criminal charges in court, he has yet to be proven guilty. At the same time, he has contributed a lot to the country. So we have no reason to hate him,” she said.
A trader, who only wished to be known as Syukor, said he felt privileged that Najib had stopped by his clothing shop.
“In my 20 years of business, this is the first time a national leader has paid a visit to my shop. Thank you Najib,” he said.
Today’s bazaar visit was the seventh by Najib. He is expected to visit a few more before he returns to Pekan to celebrate Hari Raya, which falls on June 5. - FMT
